History
From a Korea–Japan Colloquium to APCS
The Asian Pacific Conference on Shell and Spatial Structures (APCS) began as the Korea–Japan Colloquium on Shell and Spatial Structures.
The colloquium was proposed by the late Professor Yasuhiko Hangai of the University of Tokyo and Professor Emeritus Taek-Jin Kwun of Sungkyunkwan University. Its first meeting was held in Jeju, Korea, in 1984.
In its early years, the meeting was organized alternately in Korea and Japan. It provided a focused academic setting for researchers and engineers working on shell structures, spatial structures, and related fields.
Expansion Across the Asia-Pacific Region
The 4th meeting was held in Tokyo in 1993 in conjunction with the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS).
In 1996, the 5th meeting was held in Beijing, China. At this point, the conference expanded beyond Korea and Japan and adopted the name Asian Pacific Conference on Shell and Spatial Structures, or APCS.
Since then, APCS has continued as a regular international conference in the Asia-Pacific region. It has served as a meeting place for researchers, engineers, architects, educators, and practitioners to present work and exchange knowledge on the analysis, design, construction, and development of shell and spatial structures.

Returning to Jeju in 2027
APCS 2027 marks a meaningful return to Jeju.
Forty-three years after the first Korea–Japan Colloquium was held on the island, APCS will return to the place where its history began. This return gives the 15th edition of the conference a special significance within the APCS series.
The Jeju meeting will continue the conference’s long-standing role as a place for academic and professional exchange in shell and spatial structures. At the same time, APCS 2027 will look ahead to new directions in the field, including digital design, artificial intelligence, sustainability, resilience, and advanced construction technologies.
We look forward to welcoming the APCS community back to Jeju in 2027.
